Farmer’s Wife 1930s Block 32 Fanny

Hello and welcome to Daydreams of Quilts for Block #32 Fanny in the Farmer’s Wife 1930s quilt along hosted by Gnome Angel and sponsored by Fat Quarter Shop and Marti Mitchell.

Block #32 Fanny pieced by Daydreams of Quilts
This block was fairly easy to break down into logical steps because there are clear rows in the block. I have numbered the rows with my Alphabitties to help us in this tutorial.
Tutorial notes:
Please refer to the diagram on your printed sheet for this block that you printed from the CD that comes with the book as you work through this block. I have used the letter names assigned to each piece in the diagram for referring to the pieces of the block this tutorial. I cut all my pieces with my rotary cutter by putting the paper template on top of my fabric and lining up the quarter inch line of my ruler on the solid lines of the templates to cute with an accurate quarter inch seam allowance. I made sure to cut all the little notches on the corners of the printed paper templates to make it easier to match up my pieces when sewing. To save cutting time I folded my fabrics so I would have four layers and cut multiples of four at once for those pieces that repeated several times in the block.
Cut all your pieces and lay them out on a work surface according to the block diagram on the printed sheet from the book’s CD. Here the rows have been numbered from 1 to 5 for the purposes of this tutorial.

Step 1: Piece rows 1 and 5

  • Sew A rectangles to B squares and press towards A
  • Sew E triangles to D triangles. You can also sew these pieces for row 3 at this time if you wish. Press towards E.
  • Sew A/B pieces to D/E pieces and press towards A.

This is what you will have after Step 1 is completed. Rows 1 and 5 are pieced and the ends of row 3 are pieced.

 Step 2: Piece rows 2 and 4.

  • Sew E triangles to B squares. Press towards B
  • Sew C triangles to B/E units and press towards C.
  • Sew A rectangles to C/B/E units. Press towards A.
Here is what you have after sewing C triangles to B/E units.
  • Sew A/C/B/E units to F square. Press seams to F square.
  • The pressing directions for Step two create locking (also called nesting) seams with rows 1 and 5.

This is what you will have when Step 2 is completed. Rows 2 and 4 are pieced.

Step 3: Sew row 3

  • Sew row three together which is quite simple. Sew the left and right F squares to the centre F square and sew the D/E units to the ends. Press seams towards left and right F squares to create locking (or nesting) seams with rows 2 and 4.
  • Then sew your five rows together to finish the block. I pressed my top two row seams towards row 3 and my bottom two row seams towards row 3. You could also press your seams open to reduce bulk.
Block 32: Fanny All pieced! 🙂
I liked this block! I hope you like making it too. Thank you for visiting my blog today to learn how I pieced block #32.
