Welcome! Today’s block in the Canadian Summer Quilt Along is the Canadian Fall Basket Block by Arlene of The Quilter’s Bouquet.
This block is another great opportunity for some slow stitching outside if you choose to hand sew the blanket stitching around the applique. Or, if you prefer faster stitching you can use your sewing machine to secure the edges of your applique with machine stitches such as zig zag, satin or blanket stitch depending on what your machine has. Here is the link for my short little YouTube video tutorial on hand sewing blanket stitches on applique.
This is my version of Arlene’s Canadian Fall Basket block. I chose to blanket stitch the edges with my sewing machine before sewing this block into my quilt top. I just love chickadees! Such sweet little birds.
This week Daydreams of Quilts is sponsoring a giveaway of some Cotton Shweshwe fabrics from our shop. These 100% cotton fabrics come from South Africa and feature beautiful vibrant colours. The hibiscus print and the orange are fat quarters and the yellow circled dot is a 13.5″ x width of fabric cut. The Quilter’s Bouquet is also giving away one of their PDF patterns this week.
To enter to win all you need to do is publicly post your Fall Basket block in the Instagram hashtag #canadiansummerqal before next week’s post on June 25th. Remember you will need a public Instagram account in order for your post to show up in the hashtag.
For this giveaway, if you are not on Instagram you can email me a photo of your block at: daydreamsofquilts (at) gmail (dot) com so I can post it on your behalf but please consider Instagram as you will need it to enter for the grand prize at the end of the quilt along plus it’s a great quilting community there.
Head over to Arlene’s website to download your block pattern!
