These reusable fabric drawstring gift bags are a popular item in my Etsy shop in the run-up to Christmas.

I first learned how to make these bags on Jeni Baker’s Blog. I developed my own way of making them though because I needed a simpler faster way to make them.
Over the weekend I created a tutorial video to show you how I make these bags. You may wonder why I would share how I make one of my best sellers in my shop but the way I see it is; the more people using reusable gift wrap, the better. Plus, I cannot supply everyone and there’s room for all of us in the market.

These bags are an environmentally friendly gift wrap option that uses fabric efficiently and can be reused again and again. You can make larger sizes but this size is the most efficient use of fabric.
You can cut 2 main bag fabrics from one fat quarter and you can cut accent bands for four bags from a second fat quarter. You will need a third fat quarter from the lining or a 12.5″ x width of fabric piece will make linings for two bags. (Cut carefully, there is very little waste.)
For one bag cut the following:
- cut two 9.5″ tall by 10.5″ wide main bag pieces
- cut two 4.5″ tall by 10.5″ wide accent band pieces
- cut two 12.5″ tall by 10.5″ wide lining pieces
- cut a 1.5″ square out of each bottom corner
- also cut two 32″ long pieces of grosgrain ribbon
Happy sewing and gift wrapping! 🙂
