I am in the Canadian Modern Quilt Bee on Instagram this year (#canadianmodernquiltbee) and for my bee block in January I chose the log cabin heart block by Just Jude. You can read more in her blog post. She has a free tutorial/pattern with a YouTube video.
Originally I wanted my blocks to have a Kona snow background and I was going to make a large rainbow quilt. Some of my bee mates didn’t have Kona snow though so half my blocks came with a white background and I decided to make two quilts.
One quilt is for my son’s girlfriend and one is for her twin sister. Both girls are graduating from high school this week.

I am so appreciative to my bee mates for helping me make the blocks for these quilts and I know the girls will love them as they have grown up with quilts from their Mom and their Grandma too.
I put a cute Anne Kelle print from Robert Kaufman on the borders of Matryoshka dolls and used striped Essex linen for the binding.

I am so pleased to have finished these two quilts in time for the graduation and can’t wait for the girls to receive them!
Glitched on Loading is the newest quilt pattern by Daydreams of Quilts. This fun modern quilt is a spin-off from the Around the World Quilt and it has one block that glitched on loading.

This quilt is strip pieced to save time and fabric. I made mine using fabrics from my stash of Carolyn Friedlander fabrics.

One block, seen below, “glitched on loading”, a common computer problem many of us face from time to time.

I used “Mystic Mushroom” from Cotton + Steel for the quilt back.
I finished a quilt yesterday! This one was for a custom order from my Etsy shop. The customer who ordered it said it is for a gift for a new family coming to Canada from Syria. What an amazing welcome gift!
Canadian Flag in a Pixel Heart Quilt by Daydreams of Quilts
Yesterday was a perfect prairie day for quilt photos. I am thankful I finished yesterday because today is windy and stormy and I would not have been able to take photos.
The fabrics are almost all Moda. Mostly from Kate and Birdie’s “True North” line but there are also some French General fabrics, Moda grunge and Moda grunge dots.
There is a horse paddock at the end of our street and the horses seemed interested in what my son and I were doing with this quilt near their fence. I like to think this quilt is horse-approved. 🙂
I hope the family love their new quilt and their new country! <3
Today I went down to my studio and looked at the pile of quilts waiting to be finished. This Minecraft Quilt was on the top of the pile and was more than half quilted. I decided that today was the day to finish this quilt and that it would be done before the end of the day. Mission accomplished! 🙂

I quilted each block with stipple quilting and switched out the threads to match the fabrics as best I could.

The tutorials for all of these blocks and many, many more were written by Kelli Fannin and are available on her blog.

I backed the quilt with the paper dolls fabric from the Heather Ross Kinder line which I thought was appropriate for my kids who are thrilled to finally be receiving this quilt.

I am so happy to have this quilt finished! I hope to get quite a few more WIPs through to the finish line over the summer. A huge thank you again to Kelli for all the amazing block tutorials!
This new Union Jack pattern is the latest to be released in our Etsy shop. I have been wanting to create this quilt for quite a while and finally felt that my Foundation Paper Piecing skills were up to snuff.
Union Jack in a Pixel Heart Quilt by Daydreams of quilts.
I love the Union Jack. It was the original flag of Canada until we got our Dominion of Canada flag which was then replaced by the Maple Leaf flag in 1965. As a teenager in the late 80’s / early 90’s I was a major British heavy metal band fan and attended many concerts thanks to my high school boyfriend. (Basically, every one that came through Edmonton at the time.) I saw Iron Maiden, Ozzy Osbourne and Def Leppard (of course! That was my first concert) just to name a few. So the Union Jack was, and is, naturally cool by association. As an homage to my heavy metal fan days I have put Tula Pink’s Heart Eyes Skulls on the back of my quilt.
Heart Eyes Skulls by Tula Pink are on the back of my quilt. The binding is also a Tula Pink stripe.
I think too that for those of us in Commonwealth Countries like Canada that the Union Jack is like the flag of the Mother Ship if you will. I am very proud of our monarchy. HRH, The Prince of Whales is Colonel in Chief of my husband’s regiment and we see the Union Jack in several buildings around the military bases as well. We also sing “God Save the Queen” at major events such as Remembrance Day.
Foundation Paper Pieced Union Jack Flag.
I felt the best way to achieve the degree of accuracy needed for the National Flag of the United Kingdom was to foundation paper piece it so my pattern does require a knowledge of how to foundation paper piece. I have created a demonstration video for my YouTube channel but it is not a comprehensive tutorial. Check it out if you want a peek in my sewing studio.
Quilted with sippleing, half feather in the border and loops and wavy lines in the flag.
I quilted the Union Jack in a Pixel Heart quilt with stippling in the heart and background. I quilted wavy lines and loops in the flag and half feathers in the border.
Close up of some of the fabrics.
The background is almost all Lizzy House Whisper Palette fabrics with the exception of the city houses print. These have been treasured in my stash for a couple of years now and were from Studio 39 Fabrics.
So, I am very happy with how this quilt turned out and I made it within a week. 🙂
I made this colour blocked modern hexagon quilt this week. It was finished yesterday but it was too windy and rainy for taking quilt photos. My son was my quilt holder today and he helped me get photos of this newest finish. This quilt is for sale in my Etsy shop.
Colour Blocked Mermaid and Ocean Themed Hexagon Quilt by Anita LaHay of Daydreams of Quilts.
This quilt is made entirely with fabrics by designer Alison Glass from her fabric line called “Diving Board.” The fabrics are mermaid and ocean themed. The quilt is backed with a blue fabric by Mia Whittemore from her Flourish line.
The backing is a blue print by Mia Whittemore from her Flourish line for Windham Fabrics.
I used the Hex n’ More Ruler by Jaybird Quilts to cut the 8″ hexagons and tried to fussy cut the mermaids whenever possible.

This quilt is quilted a quarter inch on either side of all the vertical seams with bright pink thread.
I did it! Goal achieved! Huge thanks to Lisa and Diane for keeping me motivated to finish my Greenhouse quilt and any other phantom quilt alongers out there.
Greenhouse Quilt designed by Elizabeth Hartman. Pieced and quilted by Anita LaHay of Daydreams of Quilts.
I finished my quilt on Saturday and when we took it out for photos after supper it was very windy. There are actually five people behind the quilt holding it against the wind – my husband, son and three neighbourhood kids who were playing nearby.
Ombré 108″ Wideback on the back of the Greenhouse Quilt.
I loved the backing so much that I wrapped it around to the front for binding. As you can see I quilted circular flower heads and leaves on vertical lines on the quilt. The Ombré Spectrum wideback is available in our shop.

Prize Winner: The only other person, besides me, to post an assembled quilt top in the #greenhouseqal hashtag was Lisa Taylor so she wins $50 to spend in my shop by default. Congratulations Lisa!
I am thrilled to have my quilt finished and on my bed in time to enjoy for the remainder of the summer and beyond! Thanks for coming by to see my quilt today!
A quilt finish to show! Hooray! This is the Modern Tulips Quilt. This quilt was pieced by Daydreams of Quilts and professionally long arm quilted by Geeky Bobbin.
Modern Tulips Quilt pieced by Daydreams of Quilts. Quilted by Geeky Bobbin.
This quilt was made with “Sweet Orchard” fabrics by Sedef Imer of Down Grapevine Lane on the tulip flowers. The base of the flower heads is a Kona green solid. The stems and leaves are Carolyn Friedlander crosshatch fabric in green. The background is Kona Nautical.
A close up of the Sweet Orchard fabrics in the tulip flowers and Geeky Bobbin’s quilting.
This was a fun quilt to make because other than the tulip flowers and leaves it was improvised. Bobbie from Geeky Bobbin said she had a lot of fun quilting it too. She has hidden a butterfly, a snail and a dragonfly in the quilting. The bottom edge of the quilt has ferns and grass quilted in green thread.
The tulip pattern was from the Fat Quarter Shop 2011 Block of the Month for the tulip heads and leaves.

I am so happy with the custom work Bobbie did on this quilt! This is only my second time sending a quilt to a long arm quilter and I see more travelling to Bobbie in Toronto in the future.
The Modern Tulips Quilt will be in our booth this weekend at the Etsy Made in Canada Pop-Up in Edmonton.
